Supporting the Future of Cosmetology: Judging the Skills Maine Cosmetology Competition
Today, I had the honor of serving as a judge at the Skills Maine Cosmetology Competition, an event that showcases the talent and dedication of high school students enrolled in cosmetology programs across the state. This competition is more than just an opportunity to win awards—it’s a stepping stone for these young professionals to refine their skills, gain confidence, and prepare for real-world success in the beauty industry.
Why Skills Maine Matters for Future Stylists
Competitions like Skills Maine play a vital role in shaping the next generation of hairstylists, barbers, and cosmetology professionals. Here’s why:
- Hands-on Experience: Students get to demonstrate their skills in a high-pressure, real-world setting, helping them prepare for professional salon environments.
- Confidence Building: Competing in front of industry professionals boosts confidence and teaches resilience, both of which are essential for a successful career.
- Skill Development: From precision haircutting to advanced styling techniques, competitors refine their technical abilities under the guidance of experienced judges.
- Career Preparation: Many of today’s competitors will go on to become salon owners, independent stylists, educators, or platform artists. This event gives them an early taste of industry expectations.
- Recognition & Networking: Competing allows students to connect with industry professionals, learn from experts, and gain recognition for their hard work.
What I Looked for as a Judge
As a shear specialist and educator, my judging focused on technique, precision, and execution in key areas, including:
- Scissor Control & Cutting Precision – Clean lines, proper tension, and balanced shaping.
- Texturizing & Blending Skills – Proper use of texturizing shears and thinning shears to create movement without harsh lines.
- Ergonomics & Technique – Correct use of swivel shears, posture, and hand positioning to prevent fatigue and improve control.
- Tool Selection & Maintenance – Understanding the difference between dry cutting shears, razors, and standard professional hairstyling shears for different hair types.
- Overall Creativity & Professionalism – A stylist’s personal touch and attention to detail make a big difference in their final result.
Advice for the Next Generation of Stylists
To all the students who competed today—and to every up-and-coming hairstylist working toward their dreams—remember this:
- Invest in Your Tools – Your scissors are your most important investment. Understanding the difference between Japanese 440C steel vs. VG10 steel, proper shear sharpening, and scissor maintenance will set you apart as a professional.
- Never Stop Learning – The best stylists are always evolving. Continue studying techniques like dry cutting, point cutting, and face-framing layers to stay ahead.
- Stay Ergonomic – Using the right shears, like swivel shears, reduces strain and extends your career longevity.
- Build Your Network – Connect with industry professionals, fellow stylists, and mentors who can guide you on your journey.
- Confidence is Key – Every master stylist started as a beginner. Believe in yourself, trust your training, and keep pushing forward.
Final Thoughts
Judging today’s Skills Maine Cosmetology Competition reinforced my belief in the future of the beauty industry. These students are not just learning the basics—they are pushing the boundaries of technique, creativity, and professionalism. Watching them compete reminded me why I’m passionate about supporting stylists through education, high-quality tools, and expert guidance.
To all the competitors—keep sharpening your skills (and your shears), stay inspired, and never stop striving for excellence. The beauty industry needs fresh talent like yours, and I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you!
