Texturizing, Thinning, Blending, Notching: What's Actually Different?
Same category of shear, five different names, and most stylists use them interchangeably without knowing why. Here's what these shears actually do inside a haircut, and why the name you use for them matters more than you'd think.
What This Category of Shear Actually Does
Every shear in this family works the same basic way. Notched teeth on one or both blades grab a portion of the hair and remove it, while the rest passes through untouched. The result is less bulk, softer transitions, and hair that moves instead of sitting flat.
That's it. That's the whole job. The differences show up in how aggressively they do it and what stylists have historically called the result.
Why "Thinning Shears" Is the Name Nobody Should Use
"Thinning" implies you're reducing the overall amount of hair on someone's head, like you're solving a density problem. That's not what's happening. You're removing bulk and weight from specific sections to help hair blend and move, not making anyone's hair thinner overall.
That's why "texturizing" has become the preferred term industry-wide. It describes what the tool is actually doing: creating texture and movement, not thinning anything out. Calling them thinning shears in front of a client can also send the wrong message when they hear the word "thinning" and think about hair loss instead of style.
